The rebrand arrived with quiet confidence and a tight aesthetic that genuinely shifted the beach-road conversation about Mediterranean versus bohemian design. What the hype missed is the operational fragility: running a wellness hotel in Tulum with ice baths and daily programmed classes is harder than it looks, which is part of why the pause happened.

THE OFF-BOOK READ

The glass-walled beachfront yoga studio was the real architectural moment of the redesign and the one thing nobody who stayed there forgot. Even during the pause, the Colibri group's other beach-road properties are worth knowing about as the closest available substitute.

The 2024 redesign pulled Sanara out of the Tulum bohemian template and rebuilt it with a Mediterranean vocabulary: cleaner lines, lighter palette, less raw wood, more plaster. For travellers who had seen enough Edison bulbs and macrame to last a lifetime, the Lula aesthetic was a genuine shift in Tulum's beach-road design language. It is worth understanding because the building and its pieces still exist even during the operational pause.
